Keep It Simple Stupid!

Today we’ll be looking at some strategies you can use to create super catchy, instantly memorable riffs. Remember, you really don’t need a ton of notes to create a great riff. Just make something that’s melodic and memorable and it should make the riff sound great. Often simply repeating certain portions of the riff can have great results.
Experiment and see what you can come up with!
Pick a key and look for notes in it’s scale. Create a simple melody on one string, then try to back it with chords. As you go further into your song, apply these same notes into the vocal lines or solo lines of the song. The melody can carry over to almost any instrument you use.
