Making Legit Riffs – Four Part Phrasing

By Darren DeFranco

Hey guys,

In today’s lesson we’re going to learn about how to phrase rock riffs. There is no one correct way to do this, rather we are going to show you a strategy that has worked before and will definitely work for you. Basically, you play a two or four measure riff three times. On the fourth time, you change it up in a way that will bring the riff back around to the start. And that’s all there is to it!

Enjoy the lesson and feel free to ask questions!

Learn the riff we showed you and then try to create a riff of your own that can be divided into four two or four measure phrases. Remember, use the last repetition to change the riff in a way that it leads back to the beginning.
