By Darren DeFranco

Hey guys,

In this lesson we’re going to learn perhaps the most important jazz progression known to man – the ii V I. This progression has very clear movement and direction and thus is very powerful. It is used as an ending or just as a progression of a song. There’s so much you can do with a ii V I; today we are merely going to scratch the surface and introduce you to the concept.

Enjoy the progression guys!

Now that you’ve got a handle on ii V I progressions, name the chords that would make up a ii V I for the following keys:

1) F major

2) Bb major

3) D major

1) G minor – C major – F major

2) C minor – F major – Bb major

3) E minor – A major – D major
