The Sophisticated Rocker

By Darren DeFranco

Hey guys,

In today’s lesson we’re going to be looking at how to get a sophisticated yet rocking sound. We’ll show you how to make power chord 7th chords that sound awesome with distortion and can help infuse alternative, progressive, and jazz sounds all into one. Specifically, we’ll show you the shapes that belong to the key of G, or E minor. In terms of 7th chords, remember that the key of G has the following chords:

G major 7, A minor 7, B minor 7, C major 7, D7, E minor 7, and F# minor 7 b5.

Once you know the shapes though, you can apply them to any key. These chords will really help you to break free from the typical power chord shapes and sounds you hear and help you to stand out!

Enjoy the lesson, and let us know if you have any questions!

Master the examples we showed you and then create five riffs using these 7th chord shapes. Try to create some that are in a major key and some that are in a minor key. To get even more creative, try writing a riff that is based off a mode. There’s a ton you can do here!
