The Hendrix Style – “Thumb Chords”

By Eric Hufschmid

Hey Hendrix fans,

Today we’re going to show you a Hendrix approach to playing barre chords. Basically, he would play the bass notes of root 6 barre chords with his thumb and use his remaining fingers to play a portion of the rest of the chord. This way, he could use any free fingers to add embellishments. Today, we’ll show you how he would play these chords.

Enjoy, and let us know if you have any questions!

Try using these thumb chords to play an entire progression. Take something like D – C – G for practice.

Video breaks at 2:38, which is super unfortunate, because the visual really makes this lesson.
