Alternative Soloing Using Chromatics

By Eric Hufschmid

Hey guys,

Today we’ve got a lesson to help you guys solo in an alternative rock style. In a lot of alternative, it’s important to sound different and to play things that are almost a little off. Chromatics are a great way to achieve this and it’s easy using the pentatonic scale as a home base. We’ll show you how best to use this scale tastefully so you can add a little color to your solos.

Many of the notes we’re going to play come out of the ‘blues group’ scales, which you might want to review here first.

Have fun guys, and enjoy the lesson!

Play over different progressions and see if you can highlight different chord tones and lead to different places using the chromatic notes.
