Use Chord Extensions for That Wow Factor

By Darren DeFranco

Hey guys,

In today’s lesson we’re going to look at using chord extensions to write some dynamic chord based riffs that still hold a hummable and melodic aspect. Typically, banging away on regular chords won’t really capture your listener’s attention too well, you need to add something else. Chord extensions can be used to take your hook to a new level and make you really stand out. We’ll be applying ours to the key of A. Now remember, you have to be conscious of what key you are and the chords in that key so that you know the appropriate extensions to use. They don’t all work for every chord!

Really soak this lesson in and let us know if you have any questions!

Master the examples we showed you and then create five riffs using these chord extensions. As always, be careful which extensions you use over which chords. For example, the ninth extension can’t be used for a iii chord if you are trying to stay in the key, so just be careful.
