Theory Made Easy: Key of G

By Darren DeFranco

Hey everybody,

Music theory isn’t as bad as everyone makes it out to be, right? In our previous lesson we looked at how you can build the chords in a key off of the notes in the scale. Remember, every key has the same order of chords: major, minor, minor, major, major, minor, diminished. Today we’ll be looking at the key of G, one of the most popular keys in guitar and one well worth learning.

Enjoy, and good luck! Let us know if you have any question

1) Memorize all of the chords in the key of G.

2) Next, try playing a few progressions. Try I ii IV V.

3) Then, try I vi V IV.

4) Finally, play a I iii IV V. Listen to all of them and think about how they sound and what kinds of songs might use them!
