T and L Shape Theory

By Darren DeFranco

Hey guys,

In today’s lesson we’ll be revisiting an old topic. This time, we’ll be looking at the T and L shapes. Previously, we talked about how you could use these shapes to write cool riffs. Today, we’ll be talking about why those four chords work so well together.

So let’s get started!

If you can grasp the concept you should be ok to move on. Be able to identify which chords in the T and L shapes are the I IV V and vi chords. Here’s a quiz to test you:

1) If my I chord was on the 6th string, and I played a chord on the same fret just one string up, what chord would that be?

2) If my root note was on the fifth string and I played a chord on the same fret just one string lower, what would that chord be?

1) The IV chord

2) The V chord
