Sharps and Flats

By Eric Hufschmid

Hello everybody!

Today we’re going to learn another essential of music – the sharp and flat. We’ve learned some notes on the 6th and 5th strings, but you may have noticed some frets didn’t have letter names. That’s where sharps and flats come in. Hopefully this lesson spells out everything you need to know to understand the concept! If you have any questions, always feel free to ask away.

And just remember – B and E have no sharps, and C and F have no flats!

Now that you get the concept of sharps and flats, try to draw out a picture of your neck and label where the the notes are on the bottom two strings. Try to quiz yourself on where the notes are. Here are a few:

1) What is the note on the 6th fret of the low E string?

2) What about the 4th fret on the low E string?

3) And finally, what is the first fret on the 6th string?
