One String Pentatonic Brutality

By Darren DeFranco

Hey guys,

Today we’re looking at some of the foundations behind metal music. One of the most common strategies for this style is to play a pentatonic scale on just the lowest E string, so basically the notes E G A B and D. Typically, you’ll palm mute the open E and then add in these other notes as accents. You can play these accents as regular notes or as power chords, it’s really up to you!

Enjoy the lesson guys!

Master our exercises and understand how these various notes on the sixth string relate to the E pentatonic scale. Then, try creating five metal riffs of your own on the sixth string. You can really get creative here and we’d love to see what you come up with!
