Make Rock Progressions With The Dorian Mode

By Eric Hufschmid

Hey guys,

In today’s lesson we’re going to learn how to write slightly darker sounding classic rock riffs. To do this, we’re going to use the Dorian mode. Now remember, the Dorian mode is similar to the minor scale, the main difference is that the Dorian Mode has a major IV. So while not as sad as using a minor key, the Dorian scale is also not as happy as a major key. It falls somewhere in the middle, making it awesome for classic rock guitar.

Enjoy the lesson guys!

Try using these techniques to create a Dorian classic rock riff of your own.
