Latin Classic Rock With Harmonic Minor

By Darren DeFranco

Hey guys,

Today we’re going to check out a scale that bridges the gap to Latin sounding classic rock a la Carlos Santana. We’re of course talking about the harmonic minor scale. This scale in like a normal minor scale but with a raised 7th degree. So basically, if an A minor scale consists of the notes A B C D E F and G, a harmonic minor scale would have A B C D E F and G#. Today, we’ll be learning how to play this new scale.

Enjoy the scale guys!

Memorize and practice this scale. To make sure you get the concept of how to derive a harmonic minor scale, create a harmonic minor scale from the following natural minor scales:

1) D minor: D E F G A Bb C

2) E minor: E F# G A B C D

3) F# minor: F# G# A B C# D E

1) D harmonic minor = D E F G A Bb C#

2) E harmonic minor = E F# G A B C D#

3) F# minor = F# G# A B C# D E#
