John Mayer Riff Using Maj/Min 7ths

By Darren DeFranco

Hey guys,

Today we’re learning two new intervals, the major 7th and the minor 7th. These notes are quite far apart and actually have a bit of dissonant sound. But, if used properly, they can also sound very jazzy. John Mayer is hugely inspired by jazz chords and harmony, so we’re learning a riff in his style to get a feel for what you can do with these two intervals.

Enjoy guys!

Master this riff and you’ll be good to go. Then, quiz yourself by being able to identify what the note would be a major or minor 7th above the following notes:

1) Major 7th above D

2) Minor 7th above A

3) Major 7th above Eb

4) Minor 7th above Ab

1) C#

2) G

3) D

4) Gb
