Create Riffs by Subbing Bass Note Chords

By Eric Hufschmid

Hey guys,

Today we’ll be looking at another riff writing technique. Specifically, we’ll be taking a chord and substituting different bass notes to write our riff. Bands like the Foo Fighters have used this technique to create some of their most timeless hits. Many times, chords like these will define a bands sound. They create edgy/mysterious sounding chords that break away from the basic monotonous standard chords.

Have fun guys, and enjoy the lesson!

Use these chords in different progressions to see what you can come up with. Then try this technique in other keys. D is one of my favorite keys to use but also using the key of G or E is a great choice too! Any key will work so get creative.
