Coheed Style Riff Writing

By Darren DeFranco

Hey guys,

Today we’re going to check out a riff writing technique that revolves around making melodies on the fifth string. You’re going to be using the E minor scale and coupling that with a drone on the low E string. We’ll show you some common rhythms and motifs that work well, but the point here is to give you an idea to run with. Coheed and Cambria have done well with this technique and we’d love to see what you can come up with!

Enjoy guys!

Master the examples we gave you, then try to create five riffs that use the technique. Get creative – try varying your rhythm, palm muting, tempo, and more. Try playing notes in a row, try jumping around – see what works!
