By Darren DeFranco

Hey guys,

Changing keys is a great way to add some excitement to your song to give it that extra kick and keep your listeners hooked. The only problem is, sometimes it’s difficult to make a smooth transition between keys. In this lesson, we’ll show you a trick you can use to seamlessly transfer from one key to another. The trick is to use a ii V I from the key you’re going to to serve as a sort of bridge. So let’s say you are in the key of C and you want to make a change to the key of Ab. To make this switch you would use the ii V I from the key of Ab, namely Bb minor – Eb7 – Ab. We’ll break it down so it’s super easy!

Let us know if you have any questions!

Master this progression we gave you, then try to use this ii V I technique to switch between the following keys:

1) A major – C major

2) F major – E major
