1 String Scale With Open Strings

By Eric Hufschmid

Hey guys,

Today we’ve got a very cool trick to show. Basically, we’re going to play a scale on one string all the while playing an open string at the same time. This will fill out the sound and give our playing a jangly, almost Gaelic quality due to the pedal tone created by the open string. This trick is super easy, just make sure to play the right scale tones and you really can’t go wrong!

Enjoy the lesson guys!

Experiment by improvising with the scale we showed you. Then, try to apply this same concept to another scale using a different string. You’ll have to think about the tones in the scale to make sure the open string you choose will work, but try getting creative with it!
